So I promised to include a pair of red patent leather shoes in my IF illo this week. You can imagine my triumphant cackle when I read this week's theme -- I must've read their minds! Hans Christian Andersen's tale, "The Red Shoes" provides the inspiration. This tale used to creep me out as a child (as did most of his tales, much as I love/d them) and it still does. In my illo the shoes are becoming the world, sapping reality from the surroundings, and the girl herself.
Here is the tale.
And here is my illustration.
Next week I will include a self-carved rubber stamp in my illo.

Thanks for the lovely comment. I know excatly how you feel with the feeling of something holding you back. I really feel like that with my drawings. I figure I just need to keep doing it regularly so I can find out what works. Your IF drawings are great! Oh I just saw a few posts down I think I commented on your soap on Flickr a month or so back!
Aaaah! That's probably what found me lurking on your blog!
And I totally agree about the doing it regularly thing -- thank God for IF!
I like the idea of combining the pale colours (very H.C.Anderson) with the vivid red shoes, and how she does not seem at all to be in control. You captured that well.
Sweet illustration, sweet blog ;-)
I just finished reading the story (thank you for putting the link to the story). Boy, those red shoes are rather scarry. I can see the poor girl haplessly moves uncontrollably as the shoes won't stop dancing. Good illustration :)
Oh, this is fantastic!
